8th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival

The Ventana Wilderness Alliance is presenting its 8th annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival on October 8, 2020. This year, the event will be completely virtual. Event attendees will have access to the films until October 12.for five days after the festival.

Since 2013, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival has been the Ventana Wilderness Alliance’s mainstay community outreach event. The Wild & Scenic Film Festival is a collection of films from the annual festival held the third week of January in Nevada City, CA which is now in its 17th year! Wild & Scenic focuses on films which speak to the environmental concerns and celebrations of our planet.

This virtual event will replace the Ventana Wilderness Alliance’s events in Monterey and Santa Cruz. Although it will not be the same as coming together at a lovely venue, the carefully curated film program will provide an opportunity for viewers to be surrounded by new sights and stories.

In the film Last Wild Places: Gorongosa, viewers will be transported to Gorongosa National Park in Africa and hear about the incredible women empowering the next generation of scientists and conservationists. The selected films reveal faraway places and those closer home. In the short film In the Land of my Ancestors, an Ohlone Elder talks about the dire cultural and generational importance of Indian Canyon in Hollister, CA. Can biologists identify rare species in the Honduras jungle by recording sounds? Hear the grandeur soundscape of the jungle and a scientific tale in Sounds of Survival. Learn about urban beekeeping during the uplifting film Detroit Hives. This year’s films have something for everyone. The festival is a natural extension of the Ventana Wilderness Alliance’s work to inspire people on behalf of the environment, specifically the protection and restoration of the Ventana and Silver Peak Wildernesses of Big Sur’s breathtaking back country.

Guest speakers include the stars of Detroit Hives and Obi Kaufmann, author and illustrator of the California Field Atlas and the featured artist for this year’s Wild and Scenic Film Festival. Throughout the event, viewers will be able to chat with staff, guests and other attendees.

Through the help of national and local sponsors, the Ventana Wilderness Alliance is ecstatic to offer an event amid these challenging times. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for us to come together under a common thread of conservation to inspire our future efforts. The Ventana Wilderness Alliance thanks Alvarado Street Brewery for sponsoring this year’s event.
