The Singing Revolution – Documentary Film and Discussion

June 23 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free – $5
Song became the national voice and the weapon of choice between 1987 and 1991, when Estonians revolted against decades of oppressive Soviet occupation.  The Singing Revolution (2006) is the story of how culture, citizenship, and a commitment to nonviolence sustained the tiny nation of Estonia and served as the bedrock for their struggle for independence.  The Singing Revolution involved a series of spontaneous singing events and concerts, drawing hundreds of thousands to public rallies to sing patriotic songs banned by the Soviet government.  The songs embodied the spirit, patience and determination of the Estonian people and served as the cultural catalyst that galvanize and united them as a nation.
